OTTOZ DISTILLATES

OUR HISTORY

The history of Ottoz has ancient roots. It began in 1875, when a young man from Valle d’Aosta named Laurent Ottoz emigrated to France when he was just eight years old, following in the footsteps of many other Valle d’Aosta inhabitants of the time. Here, the young Laurent took his first steps into the world of spirits and liqueurs, working in a transalpine distillery.

Some years later, having grown up, Laurent moved to the city of Marseille, where he opened the famous “Café des Alpins” in the old port district.

It was from this establishment that the young man started a liquor business, supplying the surrounding area with his products.

In 1902, after deciding to return to his homeland, Laurent bought a new bar in the heart of the small town of Aosta, where he began producing his own Génépy, marketed as “Alpine Liqueur Elixir Génépy”.

Ottoz’s extraordinary flair for creating impactful advertising campaigns and his great commercial skills enabled him to quickly make his brand known throughout the peninsula. Legendary were the claims of some iconic products such as Amaro Ebo Lebo, thanks to whose exceptional tonic properties “you could even digest your mother-in-law”.

Over the decades, the history of the Ottoz family met that of the Levi family, also distillers in Valle d’Aosta. This was how a ten-year friendship was born, and when the Ottoz family decided to sell the brand in 2005, it was natural that the choice fell on the Distillerie Saint Roch – Levi. The Ottoz brand officially became part of the large family of the oldest distilleries in Valle d’Aosta.
Here, in a setting that is very attentive to technological innovation and to the link with the territory, Ottoz products continue to be produced with respect for tradition and with a view to continuous improvement, thanks also to the aid of excellent production facilities and the use of local botanicals.
